Bill Gates began studying at Harvard University in1973 where he got together with Paul Allen. They were working on a version of the programming language BASIC that was the foundation for the first microcomputer available. In his junior year, Gates decided to leave school in order to found his own computer software company.

The Microsoft company was formed by Bill Gates in 1975. Microsoft was an abbreviation of microcomputer software, a platform that totally altered the way of using computers.

The beginning of Microsoft’s success was the MS-DOS computer operating system that Gates registered to IBM. His stand against software piracy was quite a radical move in the software market which enabled his commercial success.

Other technology companies such as Apple Computer, Netscape, Opera and Sun Microsystems started to fight legally against the moves of Microsoft. Therefore, Bill Gates and co-founder Paul Allen had to deal with these companies and they have gone to court several times.

After all, the commotion ended, in 2006, Bill Gates was considered the richest man in the world with an estimated wealth of $53 billion! He was not the only one who made a lots of money, co-founder Paul Allen was nominated the 5th richest man in the world with an estimated $21 billion in 2004.

Gates also created one of the world’s largest charities. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was formed in 2000 and their goal is to improve health and education activities in the global community.

Bill Gates still has an active role in the Microsoft Company but does not have the position of CEO anymore. Today, he lives near Lake Washington with his wife and three children.
