This contradicts information provided in the reading passage, as it says some foods give you more energy and greater protection against disease. Furthermore the reading states that scientific research reveals that a diet rich in blueberries, tomatoes, broccoli and garlic can stop diseases such as Alzheimer’s cancer, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes.
There’re three examples to support the professor’s opinion. First, he mentions that blueberries do aid some brain functioning, but studies were conducted on animals, such as rats and mice, therefore, blueberries are not guaranteed to work on humans. He thinks that the article misleads in that it doesn’t differentiate between direct evidence and speculation. On the other hand, according to the reading passage, eating one cup of blueberries everyday will prevent mental decline in rats who would get Alzheimer’s. In addition, the reading explains that blueberries are an excellent source of antioxidants and researchers believe that blueberries reduce swelling redness and can also improve the way brain cells communicate.
Second, the speaker states that tomatoes can’t promise people won’t get cancer, and there’s no direct proof broccoli and cabbage prevent colon cancer. However, according to the reading passage, tomatoes are the major source of many carotenoids including the red pigment in tomatoes, which help lower cholesterol and reduces prostate cancer. Furthermore, it’s believed that broccoli and cabbage can help prevent colon cancer.
Third, the lecturer points out that the belief garlic can lower cholesterol is probably untrue. It maybe true for the first 3 months, but the effect will disappear after 6 months. In contrast the reading makes it clear that garlic can control high cholesterol and prevent the common cold and that rich in garlic will lower LDL blood cholesterol.

I was born somewhere on the earth, so people in this world are all my family. However, only five people are truly related to me. I have parents, of course, and two sisters as well as one brother. I am not a beautiful woman but intelligent I am. Some people do believe that a smart woman is more desirable than a beautiful one! I worked for five years at an international trading company, which was my first job, and then I changed to a different profession, an artist, which is more interesting and enjoyable than what I did before.

My Goals
Every one has different plans for the future. Some people have two kinds of plans. One is a short-term objective. The other is a long-term goal. Similarly, I have two aspirations; the short-term one is to have good grades on the TOEFL test. The long–term one is to get married.
First of all, my short-term plan is to get good grades on TOEFL test. I need a good TOEFL score because I want to enter college or university. If my score is not high enough, then I can’t choose which school I want to enter. My reading is really weak, so if I want to make this goal come true, I need to read a lot of English books. Actually, I like reading. However ,my vocabulary is not large enough, so I am not enjoying reading. Reading more is the best way to improve my reading. If I can make this goal come true, maybe I am going to study about daycare. I like children so much; I hope my job involves working with children. Then I will enjoy it.
My long-term plan is to get married. In my opinion, I think getting married between 28 and 30 is the best moment. At that age, I am not naïve like now; I can make the right decision about whom to marry. After that, I want to have a baby early, because I don’t want to take care of my baby when I am old. I hope I can enjoy my golden years and don’t need to wake up at midnight, or help my children to do their homework at night. I just want to do everything I want to do after I retire.
In conclusion, I know those two goals are not easy to obtain, so I need to study hard, and very carefully make decision, so I don’t want to have regrets in my life.

I am Liviya. I come from Taiwan .I am 23 years old now. I have been a vegetarian since 2004. I just feel sorry for animals, so I don’t eating meat or seafood. I don’t know when I will start eat met again. Another special thing is I can speak Japanese. However I am a Taiwanese person. Nowadays, well-being is the most popular tendency in the world. As many people gain ample wealth, they start thinking about health. It’s a method of pursuing happiness. I agree with the trend of being comfortable in life and happiness is the most important thing for several reasons.
First of all, happiness makes it easy to get a good job. Getting a good job is everyone’s dream and the most important factor in choosing a good job is how much interest in you have that kind of job. When we’re satisfied with our work, we can work more efficiently and think creatively because we can work quickly, so we can improve our ability and enjoy our work. Without feeling great about our work, it’ll be hard work. Also, enjoying work helps us to earn more money than before as we deal with one task for only a short time. We can easily concentrate on our work and we’ll get it done faster.
Furthermore, being happy keeps our health strong. Feeling great is the best way to decrease stress. It’s a very famous method to diminish stress as endorphins help keep the blood flowing. For example, laughing for thirty seconds and taking a nap for three hours have the same effect on the body. When we feel great, we can think positively and keep our mental health. Also, happiness is good medicine for the body. Immunity in our body become stronger as we are in good mood and disease cannot infect us.

Google derives its name from the term googol, which means 1 followed by 100 zeros. The company chose their name to represent the large amount of information that could be categorized and located on the Internet.
What about the founders of Google? Surprisingly they were two young university students named Larry Page and Sergy Brin. The pair didn’t even like each other. They constantly debated questions and often held divergent viewpoints. However, they found that their differences could be successfully combined in a working relationship where they would eventually head the world’s #1 search engine.
In early 1996, they created their first search engine called “Back Rub.” The main computer was housed in Larry’s dorm. When they showed what they were working on to Andy Bechtolsheim, a key player at Sun Microsystems, he was impressed with their concept and provided them with $100,000 in financial support. As a result, they had to incorporate their company. In the process, they found additional investors and started their venture with a combined investment of roughly $1 million. Soon PC magazine declared them as being among the top 100 web sites in the world.
After receiving another $25 million, they moved into Googleplex, their own building. They had a fun workspace with large colourful balls as chairs and desks made from doors. The casual and relaxed atmosphere helped in the generation of innovative ideas. For example, they introduced wireless searches and made Google available in a variety of languages. Being Happy in a Job
Most people tend to focus on only money. However, I consider that people’s emotions are much more significant than material things. In my opinion, happiness doesn’t depend on how much money people have. Therefore, I agree with that being happy with my job is more important than having a high salary.To begin with, if we can’t be satisfied with our jobs, it’s meaningless that a company provides us lots of wages. While, if we are interested in our vocation or long for that, the payment isn’t an important matter.
Second, if we don’t feel happy with our occupation, we can get some serious diseases caused by stress. Needless to say, health is more vital above wealth. Who wants to get an illness? Actually many people get fatal maladies from their stressful careers.
In conclusion, we can’t deny the fact that money is an essential factor in our lives. However, clearly, material wealth doesn’t dictate a person’s real enjoyment. This reflects just a small portion of happiness. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you select a job which can please you and give you a healthy life.

Firstly, there are many reasons for taking a job, such as respect, to establish a career, and for social status. Money is just one of these aspects. Maybe I think that money is a perfect choice for a person living in miserable conditions, because of the generous pay that the employer offers. In this case, it seems that the most important aspect of a job is money. however it is also possible that a person is already rich. They can choose a job that only makes themselves happy or allows them to enjoy their time. People in different conditions and with different ideas will choose jobs for different reasons.
Secondly, we know a lot of scientists, artists, and musicians, such as Newton…… who spent their whole lives inventing new things, drawing beautiful pictures, or creating euphonious music. There is no one who disagrees that they did not do all the things to make money. Instead they were working to obtain job satisfaction.
In conclusion, I think money cannot be the most important thing in one’s life. There are many things in a human’s life that are impossible to obtain with money. Ingvar Kamprad is the creator of IKEA shop. He was born on a farm, in Elmtaryd. This farm is very close to Agunnaryd in Sweden. Agunnaryd is a small urban centre very close to Lake of Agunnarydsjö. At a young age, he began selling matches purchased in Stockholm in the countryside. He had an excellent income and he then decided to diversify to other goods such as food, garlands for Christmas and some things for school. When he was 17 years old, his father gave him a reward for being a good student. He used this money to create IKEA. The root of the name IKEA stems from the I for Ingvar, K for Kamprad, E for Elmtaryd and A for Agunnaryd. In the beginning, he sold many kinds of merchandise. When he had a lot of clients he began to sell by mail. Finally, in 1947, Kamprad focused on furniture only.
When he started to sell furniture, he only bought it from local craftsmen to limit the manufacturing costs. Next, he had the great idea of having a display area. Even though many individuals prefer to have a well-paid position, I believe that feeling good about the career is more relevant due to personal happiness and be more useful to society.
From my point of view, people who are content with their job would enjoy their life more. Personal satisfaction at work develops a reasonable lifestyle because people are happier and therefore less stressed. If people reach their goals and occupy themselves with what they want, they will not only be pleased but also be proud of themselves and increase their self-esteem.
For instance; think of a little child who always wanted to be a doctor. Can you imagine his feelings when he gets his medical science diploma?
Moreover, people who are excited about their jobs would do a better job and advance more quickly ;therefore, they would get paid more because they are better than others. Being happy with your job
is more important than
having a high salary.
Take a look at modern society; there are many choices regarding food, clothing, vehicles and much more. As a result, we eat more, have weight problems; we work to pay for our houses, cars and future retirement. We tend to think that getting a job with a high salary will make us happy. In my opinion to be happy with your job is more important than having a high salary due to a balanced lifestyle and job satisfaction.
First of all, having a balanced lifestyle is important. In my view, balance in life means, pursuing a balance between your body, mind and spirit. If you live for money you will lose other things in life like love, talent, respect, health, imagination, conscience, freedom and also social contact.
Secondly, it is important to attain job satisfaction. Working is essential to survival. If you are happy in your vocation, you feel competent and gain self-esteem and maybe even a higher salary lately.
Many people choose their job as a function of their salary expectations and lately realize that it was a mistake. A high salary generally means working longer hours and enduring higher stress levels. Being in the wrong career is also very stressful and can be frustrating. For instance, in Mexico, many workers don’t have choices. Indeed, because they are poor, they must begin working very young and select the first job they find. Therefore, they feel so frustrated about their existence.

Bill and his friends were very interested in computer programming and he and his friends formed "Programmers Group" in late 1968. After a few years, Bill and his very close friend Allen made new company Traf-O-Data. The project was developing a small computer to measure traffic flow. They made $20,000 from the project. In 1973, Bill left home because he went to Harvard University. He did well in one of the toughest mathematics courses inHarvard but he wasn't interested. He spent a lot of time in front of school's computer and he slept in the class. At the same time, his friend Allen kept pushing Bill to opening new software.

Confucius, the greatest and most influential philosopher and educator of ancient China, commented, "No matter if people are rich or poor, the luckiest person is a man who is happy every day." This relates that money is not important to people, and happiness is the most significant factoring our lives. Therefore, I agree with that being happy with your job is more important than having a high salary, and I have two reasons to support my opinion.
First , being happy with your job can help people get paid well. If we are happy with our positions, we will be willing to do our work. As a result, our jobs will be well done and our bosses will increase our salaries. Another example of this phenomenon is study. When we start to learn a new course, our teachers always say," You should have an interest in this course, and then you can learn a lot." That is true. If we are not happy to learn the content of the course, we would not want to do all of the assignments involved and we would not get good marks, which are like payment in a job. In my opinion, we should only think about how a job can give us happiness and knowledge, and we should not concern ourselves about the rewards with this position.
The most important reason for seeking job satisfaction is that we can have a really happy life. Why do we want to be well paid? Buying cars, houses, and gifts for families are valuable . In fact, all of these offer a happy and comfortable life. On the other hand, people who just want to get a high salary are not able to have a satisfying life. For instance, every year the divorce rate increases by 1.12% in America, because of the heavy pressure involved in work .
I believe that a good mood for a job and suitable pay is enough.
In conclusion, possessing a lot of money does not provide a really contended life. We should enjoy our work, and make it become a part of our down time. Standard pay is enough. Don’t become a slave to money.

My Goals
What are my goals for the future?
Everyone has ideas about their goals in the future. However it is important to have more than ideas. In my opinion, it is important to make a objectives. If you have objectives in life, you have more of a chance of realize them. It is true that you cannot plan everything, like to find love, but other endeavors such as your profession and lifestyle are possible personally, my main aspiration in my life are getting a good job and have a good family.
First of all, getting a job is essential. To realize this dream, I need to have a good score on TOEFL. Next, I will look for a job in my profession, as a Chemist. In this field, it’s essential at international levels to know several languages such as English, French, German, etc., but among all of these the most important is certainly the English language. Personally, I am fluent in both Spanish and French but it’s not enough. In Europe, the professional class speaks a minimum of three languages and because I want to live there, I need to learn English.
Secondly, having a good healthy family, mind and body, is of vital importance in my life. For achieve this goal, I need to have a good environment for my family, such as, a house, enough money for education of my child, etc. If I have all that I will considerer myself as having achieved success on the other hand if I don't have all that, I will still happy because I tried.

My name is Juana. I was born in Jerez, Zacatecas in Mexico. This is a really small city. In the beginning, my father was a farmer, but he decided to go to Irapuato Guanajuato because in Mexico the farmers don’t have enough money to survive. When that happened I was two years old. In Irapuato, I studied in elementary and high school. Afterward, I left Guadalajara to study Chemistry at the University of Guadalajara. When I finished University I worked there for two years. Then, I returned to Irapuato and I worked one year in the Negromex Company. The company decided to go to Tampico Tamaulipas (another city in Mexico) and invited me to go with them. I stayed there for two months but I hated this city, so I returned to Guadalajara and began my Masters in chemistry. At the same time, I thought about Organic Chemistry . I love teaching chemistry.
I had an opportunity to go to France to do my Ph. D in biodegrable polymers. After that I went to Germany for a post-doc for two years.
I stayed in Mainz Germany for two years. I loved Germany. There I met my husband; however, I didn’t want to stay in Europe. I wanted to return to Mexico. This is the reason why it was so difficult for my husband to convince me to marry him. Finally, I got married because I really love him.
He found a Job in Utrecht in Holland so, we went there but I need to improve my English for increase my opportunities to find job. This is the reason why I stay here in Vancouver.

What Are my Goals For the Future?
Having dreams helps people to decide what to be. Everyone has dream for the future. In my case, my future plans are earning a lot of money and helping the poor people.
At first, earning a lot of money is important to me. If I have enough money when I have to make a decision, I’ll be able to easily choose without concerning myself with finances because sometimes these difficulties will make me change. For example, when I want to change jobs, money will be determining. If I don’t have enough money when I want to initiate a change in employment, I would have to continue working. Therefore, having enough money can enable me to switch jobs if I so desire.
Also, money will help me get the education which I want. I can study by myself, but taking courses is the quickest route to obtaining a good direction to achieve my goals. For example, if an engineer studies a business course, he will sell the product which he makes. Following this, he’ll make better product than before. However, money is necessary to take courses because I have to pay for tuition fees if I want to take professional courses.
Actually, I don’t like money because it often make humans silly, but I can’t deny the necessity of money. Though money isn’t everything of life, I need the money for the reason.
Secondly, helping the poor people is another plan.
Many people are living without enough water, food, and adequate housing. Whenever I watch them on TV, I feel sympathy for their lives so I decided to help them when I earn a lot of money. Furthermore, it will give my life a sense of meaning and enhance my feeling of well-being goal so that I can.

In conclusion, my goals are to live in Tokyo and learn additional languages. I have to finish my Japanese study so that I can work and live in Japan. The goals are not very difficult for me. I just need more time and money.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Joe and I’ve been a VCC student for 4 months. First of all, I’m glad to take a TOEFL class with such an excellent teacher and awesome classmates. A TOEFL score is a critical element in getting the job I want in Korea. Although now I know nothing about TOEFL, I hope my English skills will improve by taking this class.
I’m from Seoul, which is the capital, of Korea. Before I came here, I was in the army. It was a precious experience for me, because I learned various things there. I learned how to do fatigue duty, be obedient, responsible, respectful and courageous. After I finished military service, I felt as if I was reborn again as a manly man.
As for my free time activities, I like all of sports. Especially I’m crazy about playing soccer, even watching it. Whenever I had free time, I used to play soccer with my friends there. Since I came here, however, I have hardly played soccer. Furthermore, the weather in Vancouver makes me feel depressed. I have to be satisfied with only watching the game on TV. Otherwise I need to find some sports which can be accomplished indoors.

Susan and France
Hi Everyone,
My name is Susan and I am your TOEFL iBT instructor. I know a lot about this subject because I’ve been teaching it for a number of years and I’ve taken a special interest in it. In fact, I even work on TOEFL when I am on holidays! That shows you that I really take my job seriously. I hope I will be able to help you improve your own knowledge of TOEFL so that you may achieve the goals you have established for yourself.
I’m from Montreal, Quebec and that is where I learned French. I had this wonderful friend, who worked with me at the same school, and she taught me how to speak French through many long discussions and lots of fun outings such as skating, dancing, and swimming. Initially, this life-changing experience is what got me interested in language instruction. This woman had a huge influence on my life. She is my closest and dearest friend. We still keep in touch and visit when we can.
As for my free time activities, I like drawing, painting, swimming, writing and reading. I am a member of an artist’s group that meets every week for life-drawing sessions. I have a lot of good friends there. I try to swim at least three kilometres a week. Swimming is my favourite sport. It is very relaxing and I always feel great afterwards. Writing and reading are two activities that associate well with my job as an instructor. Becoming a better writer myself helps me teach others how to improve their writing skills. Reading is a great way to expand your vocabulary and it also helps to improve the calibre of your own writing. I’m very satisfied with my hobbies. I have an abundance of interesting activities that boost my creativity, keep me in shape and challenge my mind.

My name is Alfred. I come from Hong Kong: however, I am an American citizen. I was born in California. Therefore, I moved to Hong Kong when I was a baby; as a result, my first language is Cantonese and not English. I have two siblings, and they are one older brother and one younger sister. The three of us have the different nationalities; therefore, when we are traveling somewhere, our passports make the officer very confused.
I have few hobbies such as reading comics, drawing pictures and playing video games. My favorite comic is Dragonball Z, because that story includes many cool stylish characters and individual skills; thus, I am crazy about collecting the productions of Dragonball Z, for instance, cards games and toys. My other hobby is drawing pictures. I usually draw a picture after I have found a nice image from a comic; also, I will collect them and put in the folder. My third avocation is playing video games. My favorite game is Gundam Seed Destiny, which is the best robot fighting game I have played. The system of that game has a great balance, so most of the robots have equal ability.

My Goals For the Future
Everyone has their own dreams and goals in life. All I want is to have money, success ,fame and happiness. Therefore, my main aspirations for the future are to get a good and successful job, and to travel the world.

My first aim is getting an enjoyable job. Even when I was a little child, I knew that I would like to have a fun and active job. When I was in the middle school, I started to become interested in movies. The films and actors that I liked inspired me and I decided to study Film and TV.
To realize this plan, I need to get a good score on the TOEFL test. After I get a satisfying result on the test, I will go to university and take a Film Production course.
Second, my purpose is traveling the world. After I make a lots of money, I would like to visit other countries. The Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget who had an unique investigative technique related to learning theory compared to usual tradition had an unbelievable effect on American education. In his opinion, all humans have an instinct for figuring out how the world works. As long as our mind can grasp the incidents we notice, we are at equilibrium. The critical point is that we can’t expand our scheme about a subject if we don’t have pre-existing data about it. Therefore, educators should present new information that rests on students’ prior knowledge. In addition, new information should be enough interesting to be motivating but not overpowering. Otherwise, the learning will not occur since the new data can not attach itself to what the learner already knows.

Hi Everyone,My name is Mitchel and I’m studying TOEFL at VCC. I wanted to enter college in Vancouver so I came here 4 months ago. Studying English is awful stuff for me because I’ve usually study subjects relative to my major. My major is electronic engineering and my favorite subject is circuit designing. Although English isn’t my favorite subject, I have to study it because it’s necessary to get a good job and to study professional courses. Therefore, I’m here to study English.
I’m from Korea and I graduated from university 5 months ago. For my university life, I’d experienced a lot of stuff. First of all, I was crazy about music and my brain was filled with how to play music instruments well. I’d usually spent my spare time playing with friends rather than studying. On the other hand, I loved my major, especially about circuits which has logical concepts. It’s the reason that I want to keep studying my major.
My hobbies are playing the guitar and playing basketball, but I love all music instruments and outdoor exercise. I enjoy my sports when the weather is fine on the weekend. My hobbies are really an effective way to get rid of stress and I’m going to keep up my hobbies for all my life. My Goals
by JinEveryone wants to be happy in their lives. I believe that if we want to be joyful, we need goals because they are most important to set up a successful life. My main purpose for the future is to get a good job and to meet an ideal partner.
First of all, I would like to work in hotel management. Personally, I’m a sociable person. I like to meet lots of people even if they are different from me. I really enjoy servicing and helping people. This kind of work has been my dream job since I was very young. Also, there are lots of tourists visiting my country recently so if I work in a hotel, I need to have good language skills, especially English. Furthermore, many people have good English skills in Korea nowadays. That’s why I should improve them. To get my ideal job, I need to get a good TOEFL scores because it is required to enter a university program in hotel management.
Secondly, I think finding a perfect partner is the most significant thing in my life. My concept of an ideal partner is someone who loves children and dogs, has a good job, and someone with whom I can share everything with. A personality compatible with mine is very important. I would like to find and be with an ideal partner by the end of my twenties because I want to have my own family and settle down early.
As a result, I really want to achieve my two goals. It won’t be easy for me. However, if I really do my best and try hard, I’m positive that someday, I can attain them. If I were to achieve both of my goals, I would be very happy with my life at home, and at work.

I’m from Seoul, Korea. Seoul is the capital of Korea, so everything is so fast-paced and crowded there. Also, there are lots of fun places and people. There are lots of high-rises, good restaurants, shopping malls and clubs so that if you visit Korea, you can have a lot of fun. I have a few close friends. We used to go clubbing, shopping and have dinner together so I miss my life in Korean and my friends. But now, I know that if I want to achieve goals for my future, sometimes I need to sacrifice. What are my goals for the future Mosr people pursue fame or wealth. I was also one of those people. One day, I saw many poor people on TV. Especially, a number of Africans were dying because of a lack of food. After that, I decided I had to help them, and also I realized that I have to earn a lot of money in other to assist poor people.
First of all, whenever I share my things with other people, I feel happy. I have dreamed about helping other people since I was young. I'd like to donate portion of my possessions. My Goals
Absolutely, everyone lives with their own goals, even if they are possible or impossible to achieve. it is really great to dream. On the other hand I usually deal with some people who don’t have any dream as dead bodies. In my case, I have two interesting objectives for the following reasons.
My first purpose is getting a reasonable TOEFL score as soon as possible. This’s because I don’t have much time to spend in Vancouver. I‘ve wasted a lot of time fooling around and drinking , and that brings about a lazy life. However, these days, I am realizing that I have to my focus on my purpose, and budget my time so that I can obtain a high score quickly.In order to get a excellent job, my plan is to join GIA which is the most famous jewelry school in the world . However, if I don’t obtain more than a score of 70, the GIA definitely won’t allow me to become a student there. More over, I want to be a great son for my parents. When I left for CANADA, I promised them I would get a high score on theTOEFL test.For all of these reasons achieving an acceptable TOEFL score is very important to me.
Another goal is to support an extremely happy family . Fist of all, as the old saying goes “There is less trouble in governing a private family than a whole kingdom” I believe thatone of the most significant jobs is to manage a family well. I’ve heard several times that everything is base on the condition of your home environment. Further more, I‘ve wanted to be a perfect father since I was a child.I’ve observed my father who has put a lot of effort into the administration of my family, and it has affected me profoundly . In this sense, I can say that my one of my main goals is to be a good father and to have an ideal family.
In conclusion, I have run to achieve my aims, and sometimes, I faced some barriers such as falling behind in competition, and crashing opinions with someone around me. but I know that I have to take a step forward ,By doing so,I can spend peaceful and warm experience with my family, and I definitely won’t regret my life when I pass away.
